Cooperation with other survey organisations

The SOM Institute cooperates with other survey organisations in both the academic world and the private sector.

The SOM Institute and the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg collaborate around the national election polls. SOM researchers also collaborate with the Swedish National Election Studies and the Swedish public television broadcaster Sveriges Television regarding the VALU exit polls and, starting in 2010, with the international study World Value Survey (WVS), which aims at exploring how people’s values change over time and how people’s values differ across countries.

Every year, Gothenburg-based MedieAkademin carries out the so-called Förtroendebarometern (the Confidence Barometer) – a national survey on people’s confidence in society based on an Internet sample. Since the difference in sample selection between SOM surveys and Förtroendebarometern offers a great opportunity to test and evaluate the methods used, the SOM Institute often tries to make the questionnaires as similar as possible. Sören Holmberg and Lennart Weibull are in charge of this work.

Since 1986, the SOM Institute collaborates with the Swedish Newspaper Research Programme (Dagspresskollegiet). The Swedish Newspaper Research Programme sets out to explore the long-term development of the Swedish media from an audience perspective. In addition, the SOM Institute continuously exchanges experiences with Nordicom (the Nordic Information Centre for Media and Communication Research). Every year, Nordicom conducts the extensive survey study Mediebarometern.

The SOM Institute has also collaborated with TNS-SIFO, Statistics Sweden and Gfk on different issues concerning survey methodology.
