Cooperation in the academic world

In the beginning, the SOM surveys were linked only to research projects at the Departments that started the Institute. However, soon many other actors expressed an interest in contributing questions to the national and regional surveys. Researchers who would like to participate with a project in the SOM studies are welcome to contact the SOM office.

The SOM institute cooperates with researchers from other disciplines at the University of Gothenburg and from other higher academic and research institutions (for example the universities in Karlstad, Lund, Örebro and Borås).

It is important for the SOM institute to create platforms for collaboration across traditional academic borders, both among disciplines and among educational institutions. Researchers from other fields and institutions are therefore always invited to join the work with the surveys.

In recent years, the SOM Institute has started several research collaborations with researchers in the natural and medical sciences (for example regarding people’s attitudes regarding the marine environment, various animal species, personality and health). The only requirement is that the provided questions harmonise with the SOM focus on society, opinion and media.

Studies with a long-term perspective are given high priority, but there is also room for more limited studies related to current events of significant public interest, such as the swine flu epidemic in 2009.
